RRDI DIVISIONS

Socio Economics Division

Socio-Economics Division at Rice Research and Development Institute (RRDI) collaboratively works with Socio-Economics and Planning Centre (SEPC), Peradeniya to enable increased production/productivity and income from paddy farming for Sri Lanka. The Division engages in various socio-economic research and policy analysis on resource utilization in paddy farming, marketing issues to enhance self-sufficiency in rice.
The Division coordinates different socio-economic programmes of DOA and prioritizes research to solve numerous socio-economic issues of paddy farmers and their livelihood. The main research areas focused of the division are minimize risk in farming income, analysis of cost of cultivation for paddy, adoption studies of popular rice varieties/rice technologies, marketing issues encountered by the paddy farmer, socio-economic issues resulted from agrochemical misuse, consumption pattern and the demand for rice.

  • Estimation of Cost of Cultivation in paddy farming.
  • Undertake different research studies as demanded by the Government and other responsible institutes of paddy farming
  • Publish newsletter on “Rice varietal distribution in Sri Lanka” anually
  • Collaboratively engage in different activities organized by RRDI and SEPC.
