Agriculture Research Station

Introduction

Agriculture Research Station, Rahangala function as a substation of Fruit Research and Development Institute. Station was established in June 1978 and it was administrated under Horticulture Crop Research and Development Institute up to 2019 while conducting research and development activities on temperate fruit crops and up country vegetables. This Station is station is the only research station handling research on temperate fruits that are most adaptable to the Up Country Intermediate Zone and Nuwara Eliya district.

ARS Rahangala

History

This institute was established in 1958, as a collaborative unit with Government farm, Government Seed Potato stores and Research Station. The station was started to function as separate institute, since June 1978 at the office premises located in Keppetipola Road, Boralanda town. At present station was functioning as a substation of Fruit Research and Development Institute.

Objectives

  • To develop efficient and environmentally friendly, sustainable and economically viable production, harvesting technologies on temperate fruit crops.
  • To disseminate technologies in collaboration with state and private sector extension organizations.
  • Collaborate with private and public sector organizations to develop fruit industry.

Services

  • Development and dissemination of technologies for temperate fruit crop cultivation
  • Planting material production for Department of Agriculture recommended Citrus and Pear varieties
  • Provide training facilities for university students, NVQ trainees, School students and farmer on temperate fruits
  • Assist to farmers overcome field issues related to temperate fruits
